A huge explosion that brought down a motorway bridge killing two and injured 70 next to Bologna Airport has caused massive disruption among passengers – but despite the chaos the gateway has been running flights as usual.
The traffic accident happened this afternoon when petrol tanker exploded into a fireball causing a motorway bridge to fall onto cars below near the northern Italian airport. Police have said the blast could be felt in the busy terminal.
Police said 70 people were injured, some with serious burns.
Dramatic footage shared on social media platforms like Twitter, and Instagram shows a huge fireball in the sky and smoke rising over the airport in the country’s north.
According to reports, a crash involving a petrol tanker took place, with the vehicle then exploding.
Police said they had closed off the motorway where the crash took place as well as the surrounding area in Borgo Panigale, on the outskirts of Bologna.
