American has been named the worst US airline for mishandled luggage in a new report.

Luggage shipping experts MyBaggage.com analysed data from the US Department of Transport (DoT)’s Air Travel Consumer Report, which included data detailing the number of bags, wheelchairs and scooters loaded onto aircraft from January 2021 to January 2024.

MyBaggage.com compared this data to the total number of reports of these items being mishandled, revealing that American Airlines had the highest rate of mishandled luggage per 1,000 items enplaned.

The company’s data shows the US carrier had a mishandling rate of 8.71 based on the data published by the DoT, which it said “may come as no surprise” being the biggest airline in the world.

Regional US carriers Envoy Air and Republic Airways were named second and third in the report, with scores of 8.25 and 7.01, respectively.

A spokesperson for MyBaggage.com said: “Airports are some of the busiest and most complex pieces of infrastructure with thousands if not tens of thousands of people flowing through them daily.

“Usually, places of excitement and joy can quickly switch up if you arrive to find your bags were left behind or on their own vacation somewhere else.

“The data shows that these circumstances are rare. Even with the airline that loses the most luggage, America Airlines, there is still only a 0.87 per cent chance that they would lose your luggage based on the stats from the past three years.”
