An American Airlines plane collided with a United jet carrying more than 290 passengers at Chicago O’Hare on Wednesday, prompting an FAA investigation.

The incident occurred at around 9:50am local time on Wednesday morning when an American B737-800 collided with a United B787-10 during taxiing operations.

American Flight 1979 – bound for Los Angeles – was taxiing when its wingtip struck the tail cone of United Flight 219, which was stationary and scheduled to depart for Honolulu.

A full-scale FAA investigation is now under way after airport operations were disrupted at Chicago O’Hare.

Passengers on the American B737-800 reported feeling like they had hit a pothole, as described by WGN reporter Sean Lewis, who was onboard at the time of the incident.

No injuries have been caused to any passengers or crew on either aircraft involved.

American said customers “deplaned normally at the gate”.

“We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience this caused,” the airline said in a statement.

According to a statement from United, “another airline’s aircraft made contact with the tail cone of a stationary United plane while on the taxiway awaiting departure”.
