Australian start-up Koala Airlines has unveiled images of its branding and livery along with its management team.
According to its newly-launched website, the carrier is finalising negotiations to acquire its new fleet, which will enable its AOC to be upgraded with new aircraft type. The fleet is expected to include Boeing B737 MAX aircraft.
While Koala is an emerging airline today, it was created from the acquisition of Desert Air Safaris, which operated charter tourism flights in the Australian outback from 1970 to 1998.
Koala’s acquisition was completed in 2019, which transfers Desert Air’s operating certificate to the new carrier.
It aims to compete with the likes of Qantas and Virgin Australia – two airlines which dominate Australia’s airline industry – as a low-cost carrier, despite the recent collapses of Bonza and Rex earlier this year.
But the airline has claimed its strategy will “fundamentally differ from previous entrants” in Australia’s domestic markets.
Koala said that many emerging low-cost carriers in Australia have failed due to a sole focus on cheaper fares, leading to unsustainable competition.
The start-up, however, has suggested it is taking a more “innovative route”.
“Our goal is to carve out a unique niche that enhances the industry landscape without disrupting existing standards by creating a lasting impact on the industry,” Koala said.
Founder Bill Astling has been named CEO, while Melbourne politician Phil Le Liu has been appointed director.
Sally Spring, who has held positions at KLM, Buzz, Asraeus and Emirates Group, has been announced COO.
Operations are expected to commence by the end of the year.
