For the first time in its history, Cluj International Airport, celebrated on November 24th, 2023, the significant milestone of 3,000,000 passengers registered in a single calendar year.
Reaching this significant threshold in terms of passenger traffic has a double significance: full recovery of the passenger traffic recorded before the pandemic, namely the airport’s best year so far, 2019, as well as the fact that it is the first time when a regional airport in Romania exceeds this significant threshold.
The anniversary of these passenger milestones for Cluj International Airport has already become a tradition for over 13 years since the anniversary of the 1st million in 2010 and 2nd million passenger in 2017.
The professional activity carried out by Phd.Eng. David Ciceo, Cluj International Airport’s CEO, during an impressive 28-year mandate, is furthermore emphasized by this absolute record of passengers and utmost extraordinary 100 times growth of the airport traffic from 32,000 passengers in 1996 to over 3,200,000 passengers in 2023.
This achievement is also proof of how the development of the airport led to the growth of the region and emphasizes the role that all the destination airports play in facilitating economic, cultural, and social exchanges.
The relevant air travel demand of our catchment area played a pivotal role in contributing to this milestone, that not only reflects the growing popularity of the airport, but also highlights the importance of its route network.
The lucky passenger was selected by the national carrier Tarom, on its flight number RO 643, from Bucharest Otopeni to Cluj-Napoca, and awarded by Cluj International Airport during the anniversary event, in the presence of local authorities, partner institutions and organizations, airport and airline representatives, respectively local mass media.
David Ciceo, Managing Director of Cluj International Airport, stated the following: “Today we mark the success and excellence of airport operations, through an anniversary moment celebrated together with our passengers and partners, namely exceeding the milestone of 3,000,000 passengers.
“If in 1996, the airport recorded about 32,000 passengers annually, now in 2023, the traffic has increased 100 times, reaching the absolute record of 3 million passengers registered in one calendar year.
“The national airline operator TAROM is the oldest trading partner of the administration, which is a reason for gratitude, but we also want to appreciate the contribution of Wizz Air, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Hi Sky, Turkish Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Air Connect, Aero Express Regional or charter carriers to this exceptional success of the 3,000,000 passengers reached.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all passengers, collaborators, partners and the entire airport team for the special contribution within our development projects, which will serve Cluj passengers and those from the entire region.”
