Construction has begun on a €15m redevelopment of Shannon Airport’s terminal, forming part of a wider €40m investment programme aimed at modernising facilities and cutting carbon emissions.
The works mark the first phase of a broader upgrade across the airport site, focused on improving passenger experience while delivering long-term sustainability gains.
1970s façade to be replaced
A section of the main terminal dating from the 1970s will be removed and replaced with a new curved architectural façade designed to improve energy efficiency.
Airport officials say the redesign will support the transition to electric heat pump technology and upgraded heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The move is intended to phase out fossil fuel-based systems and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Sustainability measures also include the removal of an older 1950s link corridor. The airport estimates this will cut around 62 tonnes of CO₂ annually by eliminating the need to heat and cool the ageing structure.
Immigration and baggage halls to be modernised
Alongside environmental upgrades, passengers can expect major improvements to arrival facilities.
The immigration and baggage halls will be fully refurbished, with brighter interiors, upgraded toilets, improved lighting and flooring, clearer signage and redesigned layouts. A new dedicated entrance for European passengers is also planned to help reduce queues and speed up passenger flow.
New accommodation for fixed-base operators will be built within the arrivals area as part of the reconfiguration.
Galway-based OCC Construction has been appointed to deliver the project. Work is now under way, with completion expected in May 2027. Airport management says no significant disruption to passengers is anticipated during construction.
Wider €40m development programme
The terminal upgrade forms part of The Shannon Airport Group’s €40m capital investment programme for 2026.
Additional projects include taxiway improvements and the completion of Blocks Y and Z at the Shannon Airport Business Park. The two industrial units will add around 100,000 square feet of flexible commercial space designed to meet modern sustainability standards.
Airport officials say the combined projects are aimed at strengthening Shannon’s role as a key gateway for Ireland’s west while supporting environmental targets and regional economic growth.
