A number of international flights to and from Iran have been cancelled amid reports of widespread disruption inside the country.

At least 17 flights operated by flydubai between Dubai and Iranian cities, including Tehran, Shiraz and Mashhad, were cancelled on Friday, according to the Dubai Airports website. No reason was given for the cancellations.

However, Iranian media and internet monitoring groups reported a nationwide internet blackout beginning on Thursday and continuing into Friday, as authorities sought to curb growing protests.

Flydubai was not immediately available to comment.

Other airlines have also suspended services. Turkish media reported that Turkish Airlines cancelled 17 flights to Iranian destinations, while Ajet cancelled six services. Budget carrier Pegasus Airlines also cancelled several flights to the country.

In the Gulf, at least two flights scheduled to operate between Doha and Tehran on Friday were cancelled, according to Qatar’s Hamad International Airport website.

Airlines and airports have not yet confirmed how long the disruptions are expected to last, but further cancellations remain possible as the situation develops.
