The IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) is an environmental certification programme that enables aviation sector organisations – including airlines, airports, ground service providers, cargo operators, catering firms and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) companies – to implement a comprehensive environmental management system.

From 24 to 26 March 2025, LOT Polish Airlines underwent an external audit as part of the IATA Environmental Assessment Programme (IEnvA), resulting in the airline being awarded certification.

Mateusz Dziudziel, director of the fuel office at LOT Polish Airlines said: “The IEnvA certificate is of strategic importance for LOT Polish Airlines as it confirms the airline’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and implementing sustainable practices across all areas of its business – from flight operations to office activities.

“At a time of growing social and regulatory expectations regarding climate responsibility, meeting international environmental standards is not only a reflection of awareness, but also contributes to building customer loyalty and enhancing reputation in the global market.”

Michael Schneider, IATA said: “We are delighted to congratulate LOT Polish Airlines on achieving their first IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification.

“This milestone underscores LOT’s dedication to environmental stewardship and operational excellence, aligning with the aviation industry’s highest sustainability standards.

“By successfully completing the rigorous IEnvA audit, LOT Polish Airlines demonstrates a proactive commitment to reducing environmental impact across their operations, from flight efficiency to corporate practices.

“This certification not only strengthens LOT’s position as a leader in sustainable aviation but also sets a commendable example for the industry as we collectively work toward a more sustainable future.”

The IEnvA certification is based on a comprehensive assessment of the airline’s environmental impact and represents the aviation industry’s counterpart to the widely recognised ISO 14001 standard.

The certification process consists of three key phases: an in-depth environmental analysis (covering emissions, energy consumption, waste management and biodiversity), formal certification confirming compliance with IATA guidelines, and ongoing improvement of internal procedures and activities.

Achieving IEnvA certification demands commitment from across the organisation as well as continuous progress monitoring, making it a rigorous yet highly valuable standard for the airline industry.
