Lufthansa airline set for Zimbabwe

THE drive to promote Zimbabwe as a destination of choice is bearing fruit with Lufthansa Group owned airline, Eurowings Discover set to touch down at Victoria Falls airport in March next year.

It is just over four months before another milestone for destination Zimbabwe when a Germany airline, Eurowings Discover launches the Victoria Falls route.

For Lufthansa Group, which owns the airline, it is all systems go for the arrival of the 302 seater airbus, which is good news for Zimbabwe, the airline and tourists around the world.

“We will be landing on March 22. We are excited. This is special for a destination of prime. Victoria Falls is a special package to sell,” said Dr Andre Schulz, Lufthansa Group General Manager, Southern and Eastern Africa.

This will be a culmination of sterling work by the Germany and Zimbabwe governments as well as stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality industry.

“March 31 will be a day for Zimbabwe. Imagine after so many years an intercontinental flight will be landing,” said Tawanda Gusha, Airports Company of Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer.

“From when we last had KLM almost 2 years ago, this makes it a very special development,” said Jeffreys Manjengwa, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

With the local tourism and hospitality industry on a recovery path, Victoria Falls is also emerging out of the COVID-19 induced depression, hence the importance the flights directly to the country’s tourism capital.

This latest development of Eurowings Discover flying into Victoria Falls showcases exceptional International confidence in the destination and will assist in the continued tourism recovery efforts post COVID-19.

The Air Services Development Program is being supported with technical advice from CPCS and Wesgro made available through the Zimbabwe Destination Development Program under the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, and supported by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group.
