Bahrain has launched the main works for Phase 3A of the road development project leading to Bahrain International Airport, aimed at improving traffic flow and accessibility to the airport and its facilities.
Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, Minister of Works, described the project as a strategic initiative to enhance the road network in Muharraq Governorate, reduce congestion on Arad and Khalifa Al Kabeer highways, and accommodate population growth and urban expansion.
He emphasised that the project aligns with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 and supports sustainable development goals.
Phase 3A focuses on the Falcon Intersection, with full upgrades including:
-
Rehabilitation of the intersection and sections of Arad and Khalifa Al Kabeer highways.
-
Construction of a new free left-turn bridge on Khalifa Al Kabeer highway at its junction with Arad highway.
-
Upgrading the existing waterway on Arad highway.
-
Landscaping and beautification works.
-
Installation of a modern stormwater drainage system meeting approved engineering and environmental standards.
Minister Al Hawaj highlighted that the intersection’s capacity is expected to triple from 5,250 to around 16,000 vehicles per hour once the project is complete, significantly easing traffic congestion.
The project has been awarded to a consortium of Nas Contracting (Bahrain) and Nassir Hazza and Brothers (Saudi Arabia), at a cost of 26 million Bahraini dinars, with support from the Saudi Fund for Development.
Earlier phases of the development included rebuilding Road 2403 opposite the new airport building, widening it to three lanes with a service road, and converting the VIP roundabout into a signalised circular intersection.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring smooth, efficient access to the airport for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
