Canadian low-cost carrier Sunwing Airlines has picked Menzies Aviation for three-year ground handling contracts at two North American locations.
The contracts include passenger services, ramp handling and cabin cleaning, with a renewal at Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida and a significant new contract at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Canada.
The YYZ contract is Sunwing’s largest location, brings 4,600 turns per year to Menzies Aviation’s portfolio, and prompted the handler to begin the hiring of 300 new employees at the station to ensure a successful start-up. MCO offers a seasonal Sunwing service between December and April, which totals approximately 230 annual turns.
Sunwing offers services from Canada to 73 destinations across the USA, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
Senior vice president for sales and commercial operations in the Americas, Paul Walton, said: “This is a major contract win for the Americas region, and particularly for our fast-growing Canadian business.
“The YYZ operation involves a particularly large towing element – due to Sunwing’s complex schedule at this, their largest hub – in addition to Passenger, Ramp and Cabin Cleaning elements.
“I am confident that our great team in YYZ have the tools and determination to very quickly show Sunwing that they made the right choice in selecting Menzies.”
Also in North America, Menzies Aviation in Los Angeles (LAX) has been awarded two new contracts with Air China and Hong Kong Airlines (pictured above).
Both are three-year contracts which began operations in September. The Air China deal sees Menzies providing ramp services, in addition to the cargo warehousing and freighter handling services already provided to Air China Cargo at LAX. The airline operates 24 weekly flights from LAX, which adds over 1,200 flights per year to its operations at the airport.
Hong Kong Airlines awarded Menzies LAX with the contract to provide both ramp and cabin cleaning services for their daily A350 from Hong Kong International Airport.
Meanwhile, in Australia, Menzies Aviation has been awarded the Singapore Airlines (SQ) passenger and ramp handling business. Starting this month, the service operates up to six services per day between Sydney and Singapore.
The SQ Group is a global key account of Menzies Aviation and this contract award is in line with the handler’s corporate strategy of growing its portfolio with key account customer airlines.
Vice president for commercial in Oceania and South East Asia and key account director for the SQ Group, Stuart Key said the airline group is one of the handler’s “significant global customers”.
He added: “Partnering with us in 9 locations in Australia and New Zealand shows the tremendous trust that the SQ Group has in Menzies as their preferred handling partner. We are very pleased with the partnership and look forward to our team delivering best in class service to SQ in Sydney.”
