A planned strike by baggage handlers and other airport workers at Liverpool John Lennon Airport over the bank holiday weekend is set to be suspended.

Around 200 employees of the ground handling company Swissport, who are represented by the GMB union, had been due to walk out in a dispute over wages and safety issues.

However, the union has now announced the strike action, which centred around two separate contracts – the Swissport Easyjet contract and Swissport mainline – is to be called off just two days before it was due to begin.

After two days of talks with Swissport’s labour relations spokesman Mick Whiteley, GMB will recommend to affected employees that the strike action planned for the bank holiday weekend is suspended, a union spokesman told the Liverpool Echo.

Members of the two affected workers’ groups will then have the chance to vote on a new proposal from Swissport, which the union will advise the workers accept.
