The Government of Rajasthan has transferred 440 hectares of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the development of a new greenfield airport at Kota-Bundi, paving the way for larger commercial operations in the region.
The project, cleared by India’s Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will feature a 20,000 sq m terminal capable of handling 1,000 passengers at peak hours and accommodating 2 million passengers annually.
The airport will be equipped with a 3,200m runway suitable for Airbus A321 aircraft, alongside seven parking bays, two link taxiways, a new air traffic control and technical block, a fire station and expanded car parking facilities.
Kota, situated on the banks of the Chambal River, is regarded as Rajasthan’s industrial capital.
The new facility is expected to support regional growth by enhancing passenger connectivity and potentially boosting cargo capacity for local industries.
Currently, Kota’s existing airport has limited infrastructure, with a 1,220m runway suitable only for smaller aircraft such as the Dornier 228, and a terminal building of just 400 sq m, capable of handling 50 passengers at peak times.
Urbanisation and lack of available land have prevented its expansion, prompting the greenfield development.
