In July, more than 1.4 million passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, which corresponds to a decrease of over 60 per cent compared to the same period before the pandemic, July 2019.
However, the demand for flights continues to recover with more people being given the opportunity to travel as societies open up and vaccination programmes are rolled out.
Meanwhile, the EU’s new digital Covid travel certificate creates conditions for smoother travel if control procedures can be further harmonised in the EU.
“Air traffic continues to recover and in July, for the first time since February 2020, Swedavia’s airports had over one million passengers in a single month,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia’s president and CEO.
“Some of our airports saw passenger numbers return to more than half their pre-pandemic levels last month.
“While there are many bright spots, travel is still strongly affected by the pandemic, and overall we are still far from a new normal situation, with more than 60 per cent fewer passengers compared to 2019.”
“We continue to urge our passengers to follow all advice and recommendations for a safe journey to prevent infection,” says Jonas Abrahamsson.
“The manual procedures introduced for checking digital Covid certificates, for example, take longer than usual, so we recommend our passengers to get to the airport well before their departure.”
Of the nearly 1,419,000 passengers in July, close to 1,030,000 were international passengers and 392,000 were domestic passengers, which corresponds to a 65 per cent decrease in international travel and a 53 per cent decrease in domestic travel compared to before the pandemic in July 2019.
At Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, air travel decreased 65 per cent to 882,000 passengers in July compared to July 2019.
International travel decreased 67 per cent, while domestic travel decreased 51 per cent.
Compared to July 2020, which was also strongly affected by the pandemic, passenger volume increased nearly 180 per cent.
Göteborg Landvetter Airport had a total of nearly 255,000 passengers in July, a decrease of 63 per cent compared to July 2019.
International travel decreased 62 per cent, while domestic travel decreased 70 per cent.
Compared to July 2020, there was an overall increase in traffic of 255 per cent.
Bromma Stockholm Airport had nearly 67,000 passengers in July, which corresponds to a decrease of nearly 60 per cent from pre-pandemic levels in June 2019.
At Swedavia’s seven regional airports, the number of passengers decreased between 44 per cent and 89 per cent.
However, all airports saw a considerable improvement compared to previous months and to the same month in 2020.
Air travel at Swedavia’s ten airports has decreased by a total of more 47 million passengers since the start of the pandemic.
