Swoop to start Edmonton services and makes the airport its 2nd base

Canadian low-cost carrier Swoop will today launch its inaugural flight from Edmonton International Airport to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

The sold-out flight is scheduled to depart at 10:25am (local time). In addition to the first flight, Swoop announced Edmonton as its second operational base.

As of October, Swoop will base two of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft in Edmonton resulting in the creation of almost 90 jobs in the region.

Swoop president and chief executive officer, Steven Greenway said  Edmonton is a market “keen to enjoy the ultra-low-cost fares Swoop provides”. “This, along with Edmonton International Airport Authority’s support, has meant that we’ve chosen Edmonton as our second operational base,” he added.

“Swoop, as an Alberta-born organization is thrilled to be in Edmonton as a second home and looks forward to providing more flight choices as well as the economic benefits that air service provides in the form of jobs, tourism and connecting economies,” he said.

Edmonton International Airport president and CEO, Tom Ruth said: “Edmonton’s newest air carrier will provide more flight choices and great value to passengers.  Today’s announcement is a clear demonstration of Swoop’s confidence in our region and our market.”

Today, the airline also launched its inaugural flight from Winnipeg Richardson International Airport to Hamilton. Swoop also launched flights from Hamilton, Abbotsford and Halifax on 20 June.

Swoop’s initial schedule offers service from Abbotsford, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Halifax.

From Hamilton it flies seven times weekly to Edmonton, six times weekly to Abbotsford, five times weekly to Winnpieg and six times weekly to Halifax.

From Edmonton it flies six times weekly to Hamilton and will start a 21 times weekly service to Abbotsford on 25 July. From Abbotsford it flies six times weekly to Hamilton, and it will start a 21 times weekly route to Edmonton on 25 July.

From Halifax it flies six times weekly to Hamilton and from Winnipeg it will fly six times weekly to Hamilton from 16 August.
