Turkey plans to introduce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandates in a bid to reduce aviation emissions by 5% by 2030.

According to Reuters, the mandate is aimed at complying with ICAO’s emission reduction scheme that will become mandatory in 2027.

Under the new rules, airlines will be obliged to use a sufficient amount of SAF for international flights to or from Turkey.

Fuel suppliers will also be required to procure SAF.

The Turkish civil aviation authority said it will publish minimum emission reduction targets before the end of the third quarter each year.

Airlines and fuel suppliers who do not comply with the mandate would be penalised, the regulator added.

Airlines will be expected to load 90% of the SAF needed for international flights in Turkey.
