Wizz Air has opened an aircraft maintenance centre at Aurel Vlaicu International Airport in Băneasa, Romania, with aerospace and defence company Romaero.
With new aircraft already announced to join the Bucharest Băneasa, Sibiu, Suceava and Timisoara bases until the end of this year alone, Wizz Air is set to operate a local fleet of 43 aircraft in the upcoming winter season.
The airline said Romania will continue to host the largest fleet in Wizz Air’s network, with more aircraft based locally than in any other country.
This first centre of its kind in Romania marks a strategic milestone for Wizz Air and demonstrates its commitment to the local market, the carrier said.
Mauro Peneda, managing director of Wizz Air Malta, said: “The opening of our first dedicated maintenance centre in Romania is a strategic leap forward for Wizz Air.
“After inaugurating our base at Băneasa airport back in April, and announcing a second aircraft just last week, we are pleased to be able to come with another important local development.
“It reflects our deep commitment to the Romanian market and strengthens our operational capabilities in the region.
“With the largest fleet in our network already based here, this investment ensures greater efficiency, reliability and support for our continued growth, proudly aligned with our €14bn Customer First Compass transformation plan.”
Maintenance services at the facility will commence from October this year.
By securing maintenance slot positions in Romania, this investment will improve operational efficiency and enhance the maintenance portfolio in the region, according to the airline.
Wizz Air said: “This partnership with Romaero represents a significant development for the airline, as securing timely maintenance slots across Europe in the current market can pose challenges, especially during peak travel periods.
“With access to its dedicated maintenance facilities, Wizz Air will streamline operations, minimise downtime and ensure priority service, enhancing both efficiency and reliability across our Romanian and European fleet.”
The facility will carry the airline’s activities scheduled for heavy maintenance, such as engine changes, as well as light maintenance, including regular check-ups and annual inspections, for Romania-based aircraft and those coming from neighbouring countries.
For carrying of the aircraft maintenance work, Wizz Air has signed a three-year contract with a certified maintenance organisation that also supports the carrier in other locations in Italy and Albania.
Together with Romaero specialised resources will concentrate operational efforts to deliver high quality services to the Wizz Air fleet, the airline added.
