This month, Wizz Air introduced a new premium add-on service called Wizz Class. If you’re like me, you probably already find Wizz Air’s upgrade and add-on options confusing. So, in an effort to educate myself on the topic, I’ve decided to break it down for you.

In the airline’s own words, Wizz Class targets “travellers who want a touch of comfort without the complexity”.

But is it really that simple?

Wizz Class is only available as an add on during the seat selection page of the booking process. Most crucially, it is only available to passengers who have purchased Wizz Smart or Wizz Plus bundles. So, in simple terms, you already need to be an upgraded passenger to access the upgrade. I hope you’re following so far.

Think of it like Speedy Boarding from EasyJet or Priority on Ryanair. Wizz Class customers get to board first, of course. But they also get access to the front extra legroom seats, can bring an extra 10kg cabin bag, and claim a complimentary snack or non-alcoholic drink.

During its trial phase, the airline sells Wizz Class for approximately €50 (US$58.47) on flights to and from Budapest, Bucharest Otopeni, London Luton, London Gatwick, Rome Fiumicino, and Warsaw.

But here’s the real value proposition. Wizz Class passengers can choose to block the middle seatprovided they select either a window or aisle seatensuring no one sits beside them for the duration of the flight. This feature does not come included with the Wizz Class fare. Instead, purchasing Wizz Class unlocks the option to buy the middle seat as an additional extra.

Basically, by upgrading on your upgrade, you get the choice to add another upgrade to avoid sitting next to a stranger. Or to avoid sitting next to your partner, should you so desire.

The exact cost is variable and will depend on demand, but is a reduction from the outright purchase price.

Silvia Mosquera, commercial officer at Wizz Air, said of the new service: “Business travel is growing across our network, and we’ve listened to what our passengers want.

“They’re asking for a bit more space and speed, but they don’t want to pay legacy airline prices for business class. Wizz Class answers that demand—offering passengers the room they crave and the service they deserve, without compromising our simple, convenient model.”

It is now time for the consumer to decide if Wizz Class really is the answer to their demands.
