Low cost carrier XL Airways France has suspended all operations for several days, due to financial difficulties.

XL Airways France states that it has taken the decision in co-operation with court-appointed administrators and the French civil aviation authority and that the suspensions will run from 30 September to 3 October.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this situation may have caused our valuable customers,” a spokesperson proclaimed.

“The situation of XL Airways is sadly revealing the difficulties of French air transport. We were totally abandoned and left to our fate.” said a joint union statement.

XL Airways is the second French airline to enter bankruptcy protection in the month of September, after Aigle Azur went into liquidated on Friday leaving 19,000 passengers stranded.

Representatives describe the airline as a “pioneer” of low-cost, long-haul air transport.

They claim the carrier has been exposed to “unfair competition” from foreign carriers, particularly those outside of Europe.
