Qantas and Jetstar are set for a busy weekend as school holidays conclude in Victoria and Queensland, deploying additional staff to manage airport queues and check-in with more than 350,000 travellers travelling within Australia over the next four days.
This weekend also marks the start of school holidays in South Australia and Tasmania with many families travelling interstate for the break.
The winter school holiday period has been plagued by long queues, delayed or cancelled flights and lost baggage and airports and staff struggle with the influx of travellers.
Severe weather in New South Wales and down the east coast of Australia has also caused flight cancellations and delays for all airlines over the past week, however in brighter news for domestic travellers, bad weather is not forecast for this weekend.
Both Qantas and Jetstar have put measures in place to improve operations, working with airports and suppliers to ensure travel disruptions are minimised over the holiday period.
Additional staff will be on standby to reduce the impact of COVID-19 and other illnesses with extra staff deployed to assist at check-in and manage queues.
Qantas and Jetstar have scheduled larger aircraft at peak times on flights between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and ground handling suppliers have also significantly increased staff levels in Melbourne and Sydney since the Easter school holidays.
