Swedavia’s traffic statistics for June 2020

In June, 179,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 95 per cent compared to the same month last year, when there were 3,845,000 passengers. For the third straight month, air travel was strongly affected by the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Some traffic started up again at Swedavia’s airports primarily at the end of the month, and this trend is expected to continue in July.

In June, Swedavia’s airports had a total of 108,000 international passengers and 71,000 domestic passengers, which is a 96 per cent decrease in international traffic and a 93 per cent decrease in domestic traffic compared to June last year. Swedavia then had 2,809,000 international passengers and 1,036,000 domestic passengers.

“The coronavirus pandemic still has a dramatic impact on air travel, with the result being a
95 per cent loss in traffic in June compared to last year. At the same time, we see some improvement with a somewhat better traffic situation during the latter part of the month. We see signs of a gradual restart in traffic as travel restrictions are lifted, which is a positive development for Swedish access. However, passenger volumes are still at modest levels, and we expect a slow recovery in air travel,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, president and CEO of Swedavia.

“Our top priority continues to be ensuring our passengers’ safety when they travel via our airports. We have therefore taken a number of infection prevention measures as well as additional safety measures in line with the recommendations of Swedish authorities and in accordance with guidelines for European airports. This involves everything from reminding people about the importance of maintaining social distances and providing access to hand sanitiser in our terminals to expanding the use of plexiglass and recommending the use of face masks at our airports,” says Jonas Abrahamsson.

At Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s largest airport, travel decreased 95 per cent to 117,000 passengers, compared to 2,494,000 passengers in June last year. At Göteborg Landvetter Airport, Sweden’s second largest airport, travel decreased 97 per cent to 18,000 passengers, compared to 654,000 passengers in June last year.

During the month, air traffic at Swedavia’s seven regional airports decreased a total of 92 per cent to 40,000 passengers. There were 11,000 international passengers and 29,000 domestic passengers. In June last year, there were 489,000 passengers at the regional airports.

Kiruna Airport and Luleå Airport had the smallest losses in passenger volume in June compared to the same month last year. Travel at these airports decreased 85 per cent and 87 per cent respectively, although these figures are calculated based on low passenger volume levels.
